Beige Is Not A Color

When asked why we were painting the inside of the house (which admittedly was in very good shape), my response was, "Beige is not a color."  (And now you know how this blog got its name, too.)

I'm not sure if you noticed from our first post, but every room was painted exactly the same color - beige. In fact, I kinda think the outside of the house is also the same color....er...the same non-color.  There was so little contrast between the honey-colored (and amazingly beautiful) original hardwood floors and the walls that everything seemed to blend together a bit.

So. Repainting was definitely in order.  Here are some pictures from "during" stage of things. Some of these are a bit dark - sorry about that.

Stay tuned for the afters!

The kitchen, draped and prepped.  You should have seen our painter - he was so fast at the prep work and we didn't find even a speck of paint on the cabinets.

Trying out colors in the sitting room..er..living room...er...extra room. It's an odd little room - more on that another time, though.

Color choices for the TV room . . .

Those who know me, know that I'm not all that into pink, but I just knew that I wanted a pink office. Here's the color test.

Guest bedroom.  The people at the paint store told us that yellow is one of the most difficult colors to get right. I'll need to post some pictures of my dining room back in NY as proof of that!

The powder room.  It sounds strange, but the bathrooms were the most difficult colors to choose.

The first coat is done in the living room...

The back part of the kitchen prep work....

The first coat of paint done in my office.

Progress in the living areas...

A funny side story: when we found out that we were getting the house, we knew we wanted to paint. We'd already talked about how we wanted to DIY things around the house - both to save money and because we've tackled little projects around the old place and loved that sense of accomplishment.  But here's how the conversation about painting went.  I don't even remember who said which!

We got the house!
We got the house!!
OMG! We got the house!
OMG!
OMG!
We better find painters!

We're still into the DIY thing, but the timing and circumstances of our move was so cRaZy that neither of us thought we could take on such a big project.  The pros we hired - they were in and out of here in three days. Every square inch of the place was painted.  We would have been at it forever.   Definitely a splurge money-wise, but we've not regretted it at all.

  1. Love your colors. Richard's house is beige, beige beige too. I just pulled up the carpet in the guest room and refinished the floors. I painted the room a medium brown with white molding. Will post pictures soon. I have paint samples painted all over the house. Right now I have 5 different shades of gray strips in the bathroom. I am thinking a yellow for the kitchen and family room...maybe Martha Stewart's Tahini. Love your office color.
